The Steamboat Springs Community Header Graphic
When the first Europeans began to arrive in the Yampa Valley in the early 1800’s, one of our local springs made a chugging sound that reminded them of the steamboat steam engines on the Mississippi River – so much so they named the area Steamboat Springs. Many, including the Native American Yampatika Utes, believed the area springs possessed healing powers and some still drink the “iron water lemonade” today.

The economy of Steamboat has evolved from gold to ranching to coal mining to tourism. The tradition of skiing began in 1913 when Norweigen Carl Howelsen arrived in Steamboat and used skiing as much more than just a way to get around. The following year Howelsen Hill opened and remains Colorado’s oldest continuous operating ski jumping hill. The Steamboat Ski Resort, formerly known as Mount Werner, officially opened in 1958. Steamboat is known for the abundance of champagne powder -- we receive approximately 360 inches of snow each year. With all of our winter sport activities, Steamboat has produced more than 50 Olympians!

While skiing is a big part of Steamboat, some say the summertime is our best-kept secret. Beauty and activities abound! It’s not uncommon to hear comments that “we came for the winter, but stayed for the summer”.

There is also local legend that tells of the “Yampa Valley Curse”. Once you have experienced the Yampa Valley, you’ll be destined to return again and again. There are much worse fates!

Culture, community, western heritage, incredible landscape, world-class skiing, fine dining, shopping – whether you’re seeking that ideal vacation retreat or maybe you’re considering making the Yampa Valley your new home – Steamboat has much to offer and many kinds of properties to fit your needs. 9000 people call Steamboat home – how about you?
